Ispirato (BASIC INSTINCT, ROBOCOP) talvolta superficiale (TOTAL RECALL, SHOWGIRLS) l'ex (da ormai molto tempo) bambino prodigio olandese recidiva nelle proprie costanti. In un mondo futurista ma non troppo, la terra è dominata da un regime fascista nel quale l'ambizione suprema consiste nel farsi arruolare in un'armata che, malgrado i tempi, assomiglia assai a quella hitleriana: e destinata a garantire l'ordine nella Galassia.

Il film è inizialmente curioso. Sposa infatti le estetiche appartenenti a due generi disparati: quella dei serial televisivi americani girate nei campus universitari, fra studenti biondi omogeneizzati e studentesse con le trecce adolescenziali e la sessualità, più che maliziosa, ormai rampante. E quella dei film di guerra degli anni Cinquanta: con il commento da imbonitore nazionalista, l'estetica da cine-giornale rivista e corretta da trailer hollywoodiano. Destinata a farci comprendere che urgono provvedimenti, visto che da so quale pianeta giunge la minaccia di certi insetti giganti, dotati di micidiali tenaglie da aragosta assassina e che un regista non certo restio nel sfruttare gli effetti della violenza non esista di certo a spettacolarizzare.

Dopo il prologo universitario con dovuto corollario di triangoli amorosi e toccatine più o meno (piuttosto meno, distribuzione USA comanda) spinte, è la seconda tendenza stilistica ad avere il sopravvento. Ed ecco allora, in un universo di astronavi ed aggeggi più o meno avveniristici (gli effetti speciali, l'uso della tecnologia digitale è effettivamente sensazionale; le astronavi nell'iperspazio è come se le osservaste dalla finestra; e quella delle Guerre stellari del povero Lucas sembrano ormai di vera e propria cartapesta), prendere forma una trasposizione in chiave fantascientifica di quei film di propaganda.

In a futuristic but not too futuristic world, the earth is dominated by a fascist regime in which the supreme ambition is to enlist in an army that, despite the times, looks very much like Hitler's: and destined to guarantee order in the Galaxy.

The film is initially curious. In fact, it marries the aesthetics of two disparate genres: that of American television serials filmed on university campuses, among homogenised blond students and teenage girls with braids and rampant, rather than malicious, sexuality. And that of the war films of the 1950s: with the commentary of a nationalist barker, the aesthetics of a newsreel, revised and corrected by a Hollywood trailer. It is intended to make us realise that measures are urgently needed, since from some planet comes the threat of certain giant insects, equipped with deadly killer lobster pincers, and that a director who is certainly not reluctant to exploit the effects of violence does not hesitate to spectacularise.

After the university prologue, with its corollary of love triangles and more or less (rather less, as US distribution dictates) racy touches, it is the second stylistic tendency that gets the upper hand. And so, in a universe of spaceships and more or less futuristic contraptions (the special effects, the use of digital technology is indeed sensational; the spaceships in hyperspace are as if you were looking at them from the window; and poor Lucas' Star Wars seem to be made of real papier-mâché), a sci-fi transposition of those propaganda films is taking shape.
